PERBIX BYKONEN: THROUGH THE LOOKING GLASS

YOU DO. We can provide the licensed engineer’s stamp on the architectural drawings in order for your project to be permitted. Structural engineers are a vital part of the building process at every stage:

pre-design

We can tell you about existing building conditions for renovations or seismic upgrades, or feasibility issues for structural systems and materials on new projects.

design

We analyze the structural issues in the project drawings; then design the structural members to resist the common and uncommon forces of nature.

permitting

We work to keep your project progressing through the City Building Department. When questions arise, we're right there with answers.

construction

Once ground is broken, unforeseen conditions often come to light. We provide engineering solutions to owner, contractor, and architect as the project moves forward.

We scrutinize shop drawings from suppliers of all manner of components, to ensure that they look like they need to in order to do the job they're meant to do.

If your building plans
look like this:

Be sure that a separate soils report has been ordered from a geotechnical engineer, including liquefaction information. Engineers have tried various ‘fixes’ on this building over the centuries…but when the building was designed in 1173 no one understood the unstable nature of the underlying marshy ground.

If your building plans
look like this:

Be sure that your plans include site-specific calculations for KZT. Also be prepared for the metal in the structure to become heated on one side during periods of strong sunlight, expanding and causing the structure to torque.

If your building plans
look like this:

…and you wish to add some window penetrations, be sure that your structural engineer performs a lateral analysis including the site-specific seismic coefficients SS and S1. Deflection on your window header designs will need to meet L/600. Your architect should also consider ADA ramp implications.
